It can also have three or more axles regardless of weight or being used in combination of a vehicle and trailer; when the weight of everything exceeds 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight.
Commercial Driver License Requirement
- 26,001-34,999 lbs GVW = $50,000 coverage
- 35,000-43,999 lbs GVW = $100,000 coverage
- 44,000-80,000 lbs GVW = $300,000 coverage.
Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)
If the vehicle was purchased within the last 60 days, you are not required to show proof of payment of HVUT for the issuance of the first registration.
A heavy truck is a vehicle that weighs more than 5,000 lbs. and is registered by the gross vehicle weight. It must be used to carry or pull with a trailer; goods other than the personal effects of the passengers.
If the GVW is between 26,001-80,000 lbs.; the heavy truck is considered a commercial vehicle. If the vehicle travels only in Florida then two plates are issued, having the plate that shows your decal appearing on the front of the vehicle.
If the vehicle is a truck-tractor or just a tractor, you will be issued one plate that displayed on the front of the vehicle.
A half-year rate may be requested when the GVW is between 15,000-80,000 lbs. The semi-annual registration periods are from December 1st to May 31st and June 1st to December 31st.
